Saturday, April 21, 2007: (Mumbai):

The country heaved a collective sigh of relief after the much talked about Ash-Abhishek wedding got over.

It was not just the Bachchans who were feeling fatigued by the frenetic activity during the wedding it was an exhaustion collectively shared by many across the country who saw little but what was narrated.

There was only a phera by phera account of the Abhi Ash wedding over the last few days.

That was really remarkable considering there was so little to watch. There were the same shots of closed doors gates and security guards over and over again.

At the most one could see was Shweta Nanda's gajra or Amitabh Bachchan's pagri.

The endless wait was finally rewarded by one glimpse of a ghodi sawar Abhishek and even then he wasn't really identifiable. It was just someone on a horse within a sehra.

"It was a soap opera at which we were silent spectators," said a local.

"They made it so hush hush because they knew that would evoke curiosity and make it really big," said another local.

"It was a real tamasha. Isn't there anything else for channels to show? Let them be if they want their privacy," said a resident.

Media persons said this was an event with unparalleled star value and deserved the attention it got.

"It was newsworthy, my heart goes out to the reporters on this beat who have had to wait outside endlessly but inane details were made news because we were not being given access to the real thing which was the wedding," said Shekhar Gupta, Editor, The Indian Express.

The wedding might be over but it's too soon to heave that sigh of relief. Details of their honeymoon plans in Europe are already in the air.
