Tuesday, October 31, 2006 (New Delhi):

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has denied that he has sought clemency for Parliament attack convict Mohd Afzal.

But Azad maintained that he personally favoured life imprisonment as against capital punishment.

However, sources have confirmed to NDTV that in a private conversation with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Azad had asked for clemency.

Afzal's execution, which was slated for October 20, stands deferred until President APJ Abdul Kalam takes a decision on his clemency plea.
